The Germans and Their Ingenious Transportation Habits

“No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive.”
- Mahatma Gandhi

The first thing I noticed when I got off the plane was the vast difference in Transportation.  My first though was 'Holy Crap, everyone drives a tiny little Volkswagen!  Where are are the Suburbans and Hondas?'

Of course, not EVERYONE drives a stereotypical tiny European car, but most do.... and they drive them quite fast.

There are some roads in between cities (Most highways branching out of Hamburg for example) where there is no speed limit.  You can drive as fast as you want, and people will take advantage of that.  Most people will drive as fast as their car allows (which is usually about 190-240 kmph, although fast cars probably exist)

The Germans also love their bikes.

Most roads have a sidewalk with a bike lane (it is usually the outside-the red side- of the sidewalk) if the side walk doesn't have a designated bike area, there will be a sign saying so, and you will then join the cars biking in the road-- tried it, and it is quite fun.

Living here, you have to become traffic smart-- ie, if you are not, it could lead to fines and a broken bikes.

Off to go to a barbeque with the host fam.  I will probably post about school later :)
