Ein Herzlichen Dankeschön

Before I start with the Thank You notes, I would like to tell about the 'Sendoff party' I had with my friends earlier today.  School got out after the 3rd period, so we decided to go the the Kurpark with food and see what would happen.  And to this day, my motto of: 'Party's without plans are the best kind.' has held true.   We went on the Kiosk, fountain, and play set, got Döner in the city, danced in the rain, went in the St. Johanis Church, went to Karstadt for cake, and then jewelry shopping. :-)  You guys are the most awesome people in the world, thanks for making today special.  It really meant so much to me, and is one of the highlights of my exchange.  Now I need some sleep after that :)  Couple pictues to follow.

 Now to the post theme.

......................................

Where to begin?  I've been wanting to to do this list from the start, and now with a little more than a few days left, I finally decided it's time to publish it.

Since the very beginning, when I first started looking at exchange programs and filling out applications, there has always been other people involved with my experience.  I am going to try my very best to Thank as many people as I can.  After a little bit of deliberation, I decided to list in no particular order.  If I somehow left you out.  I'm sorry, this week has been extremely busy, and the only way to add some time is to cut back a little on sleep.  I seriously thought it was Monday today, fell asleep on a play-set, and walked into the bus door today.  If anyone thinks that I left somebody out, please message me, and I'll promptly add them to this monstrous list.

But who to start with?  I figure I should probably should start with my parents, because without their financial and moral support, I probably wouldn't be here today.

So let's go!

Note: This will all be in English so everyone can read it.  For those that are here in Germany, I will say Thank you and goodbye more personally (if I haven't already done so).

To:

The Parents:

Thank you for supporting me, financially, moraly, and THEN, letting me go when I left, letting me have my own space, without prattling at me to skype, asking me for constant updates, stalking me on facebook, but still being there when I have questions.  I would not talk to you for weeks, but when I needed something signed and faxed, it would be there promptly in my inbox 24 hours later.  When I needed money, or was overwehlmed by any sort of complicated situations.  Thanks.  It actually means a lot.

My German Friends:

To Start with, Mirja:   You with me since day one.  The very first day of school,, one week after arrival,  My class had just been switched at the last minute, and I had absolutely no idea who was in 10D.  You sat next to me, and helped me when I needed it, translated for me when I didn't understand, answered my questions, told me when I did something that wasn't culturally acceptable. Thank you for being a good neighbor, teacher, sister, and friend to me.  Also say thank you to your parents for letting me ring your doorbell and bother you guys so much.  I look forward to the next time I visit, and I can just walk over like I used to at noon on a Saturday, have your mother answer the door, and let me in to get you out of bed, so we could go to Edeka to get ingredients for cookies (or blue frosted cupcakes:P).  they will always be *unser* cookies. :)  I wish you an absolutely amazing year in the US!!!!  I promise I will try my best to visit you wherever you end up, whether it be Kansas or Texas. Mirja, there are so many memories that I haven't said in this post, but will forever be in my heart.  BFF!  See you at the airport Monday!

Claudia:  Where do I start? Mein Großee? Firmling? Banana Girl :P You were the first person I was introduced to at the school- and we have been best friends since then.  I couldn't name all the things we've done together.  And if you asked me what the weirdest thing we've done was, I couldn't pick.  Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have a friend like you.  The note you gave me today made me cry.  I'm so sad you can't be there to send me off.   I really can't beleive that I saw you for the last time today.  Skype sometime next week?  Thank you for being there, and every single one of the memories.  Fly High Kleines :D

Ronja: Ronnie, I will miss you very dearly.  Thank you for keeping me entertained in Math and Physics class for the last 11 months.  Thank you for being there when I needed a hug, thank you for saying hi to me every day, I will miss your jokes, and your expertly drawn vampire-stick-men. I'm going to miss you sooo soooo much. Stay in contact <3

The Gang:  I'm lumping all you guys into one, just because the gang will always be 'the gang' to me, and I'm getting a little disorganized here trying to keep things in order with this post :P  Anyway, Jakob, Jan, Max, Marcell, Niklas, and Sven:  You guys are awesome.  To this day, I am baffled how you all get better marks than me in English, always are doing stuf together, and still have time for me, the annoying foreign girl.  Jakob: I'll always remember the 'Ghetto Bus', Pottermore, how you helped me understand all the little German wordplays that go over my head, Mini Harry Potter, and your perfect British English.  I will never forget how outgoing you are, and that you can say 'I love you' in about 80 different languages.  You play piano incredibly too. Jan: Die Niederlander.  Thankyou for sharing your chocolate and other food.  I'll never forget your red beard either. Max: Thank you for helping me with anything whenever I needed it.  Whether it had to do with this language, or understanding WHY 42 is the answer to everything.  Thanks for being a good friend. Marcell:  You are always good for a laugh, and have never failed to make ME laugh.  Oh, and thanks for practically introducing me to Döner and the Turkish pizza.  Sven:  Your a genius.  I mean, who builds a portable microwave out of a superdickmanns box?  Thank's for always answering my questions. :) Niklas: Thank you for explaining the weirdness of the other 5 to me ;)  Stay awesome!

Laura: I really didn't get to know you until welll into the 2nd semester.  You play guitar and sing incredibly.  I love your red mow-hawk and sense of humor.  It was a pleasure to sit by you in Container 12 the last 3 months.

Vanessa: We only had a couple classes together, but that didn't stop us from becoming friends.  History class wouldn't have been the same without you. Thank you for coming to the party today, it meant a ton to me.  I know you will someday go back to Idaho, as I know I'll be back in Germany.  Thanks for being there.

Anna: Well, my wannabe Swedish girl.  You have an AWESOME time in Sweden this year.  You can call or Skype me any time.  Thanks for all the fun times we had together (Remember that cute little theatre production?)  I'm going to miss you :)

Sarah: Sarah, to start with, you are probably the only reason that I survived Ecconomy class this year.  Thanks for always being willing to talk to me, Thank you for all the awesome stuff we have done together, and thanks for coming today.  I know you really want to go abroad, and I know you will find a way to. :)  See you at the airport Monday!

10D and others at the school: Simon, Vincint, Arne, Maggi: Thanks for always trying to help me where I needed it.  I still don't understand why you disemboweled the polar bear though.  Is it still stuck to the Chemistry room ceiling? For all those that were friendly to me, thank you so much, you may have brigtened my day.  To those who were not so nice, I learned something anyhow, I learned who my true friends are. :)
My Host Parents:

First Host Parents:
I thank you all very much  for welcoming me into your home, and practically teaching me the German basics.  Thank you also for helping me get orientated in the culture and getting me set up in my German life.  Thank you also for giving me freedom and trusting to do what I wanted, but keeping me up to date on things that I needed to get done.  I will someday be back in Germany to visit you all.  It was really great getting to know you all :)

Second Host Parents: Another post that I will have difficulty keeping at a reasonable length :)  To begin with, your house really felt like a true home to me.  And I didn't realize that until just last week, when I was let in the door after not visiting for almost 3 weeks, made myself tea, fed the guinea pigs, got myself an apple, and fetched the tissues from the bottom drawer... then sat down to think.  And breakfast the next morning was just like it always was. I can truly call your house home.  And I really felt like a part of the family too.  Bettina, I could approach you with absolutely any problem I had, whether it had to do with paperwork, school, friends- anything (even sitting down to teach me basic grammar rules meant much to me, I still have the flashcards).  And you would sit and listen so patiently to almost anything I had to say- in whichever language I decided to say it.  I could be about my day at school, my exchange, or me prattling unimportantly about something that came into my mind.  Last Saturday, you sat and listened to me talk until almost 1 in the morning.  I can't thank you enough for that.  I really appreciate it.  I got many things out that have been bugging me for awhile.  I also thank you for valuing my opinion and trusting me to make a good decision- and letting me figure things out for myself... and encouraging me to try new things (piano is something I will forever love).  I also can't thank you enough for taking time out of your schedule to go on an unforgettable week in Switzerland... really it was unforgettable. And Henning.  I didn't see you as often, but when out paths somehow met during the busy week, you would never hesitate to say hello and ask how I was.  I will always remember Breakfast with you Saturday and Sunday mornings, how it always turned into a mix between a courtroom interrogation, and 'Trivial Pursuit' ;-), always asking what new words I learned that day/week, and trying to get me to expand my vocabulary by talking about some odd topic in German.  I also will never see ants in the kitchen in the exact same way ever again. Oh, and BTW.  I can understand almost all the headlines in the Landeszeitung now, and be able to understand the meaning of most of the article. I promise to keep working on my German until I reach perfect fluency.  I promise to stay in contact.  Thank you both for reading my blog, and being generally interested in how my exchange is going.  I will, for the thousandth time, compliment you all's English, it is absolutely brilliant. It was so short, but incredible three months. Ich bin sicher, es gibt viele in diesem post ich vergessen habe.  Ich habe euch total lieb, und ich freu mich so sehr, wann ihr mich in Alaska besuchen.<3<3 Herzlichendank!!!!  And I completely failed at keeping that one short. ;)

Third Host Parents: It was weird for me, getting dropped off at you all's house after having breifly met you all once before.  But you all have become my family.  Thank you for helping keeping myself organized, encouraging me to do new things, and being interested in what I did that day.  It's nice to be able to talk to somebody about the little things that bother me. Thank you all for taking me with you on vacations and different trips. And thank you for being so generous, and treating me just like a daughter.  I now have a place to call home in the little village by Lüneburg.  I'll be back to see you all soon, and I hope you all can visit me sometime in Alaska or where-ever I happen to be :D

Camilla: Well Camillos.  What can I say?  I had hardly even talked to you before I moved in with your family.  But now you feel like a sister to me.  Thank you for doing things with me, and being a friend and a sister to me.  I hope you someday get to go abroad for a year.  I will miss you so very much :)

Ben: Dur, brother.  Thanks for being a brother. :P  See you later :D

Cibelle: 'Twas an interesting experience together in Lüneburg.  Although we did not spend as much time together in the end as we did in the beginning, it was still a great year with you.  Will never forget Steven the freakout kid, all our little inside jokes, all the Portuguese I learned from you, and the Latino group at Gym Oedeme.  Your English is also very good :)  Good luck with coming back to Leuphana next year, and I'll see you sometime in Brazil :D

Alvaro: Oh Alvaro :D Thank you for always being there for me, and always listening patiently to me whenever I had a problem.  And thanks for being so chill :)  You were definitely an interesting friend to have.  I wish you luck in Argentina, and I'll visit you sometime :)  I'm going to miss you.

Gym Oedeme and Staff: Especially to Frau W. and Frau. K,  Thank you for trying to get me involved in classes, and always encouraging me to try something new, I'm definitely more interested now in studying the English language more intensely.  It truly was a great year, thank you all also for chaperoning the Berlin trip. It was awesome.  I'll see you all later :)

To Los Carlitos: I don't need to elaborate, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to even name 1/3 of the experiences we've had together.  Team David, The Pirate Party, 5 floor in Prauge, La Banda Latino, the party bus, Europa tour, Ich, ich, habe, habe, ein, ein..., and the pony game, thank you for giving me such great memories. Each and every one of you are family to me.  Stay in contact, and we'll see eachother some time again.  Thank you for the awesome year.

Rotary 1800, Rotex 1800, and Rotary Club Lüneburg (and Hanse): Thank you for Europa tour, the awesome weekends, and thank you for being there to help us for our entire exchange.  Also particular thanks to my YEO Inga and both Rotary clubs for being active in our exchanges.

To all the Alaska Rotarians:  Including Cheryl, Mike, Stacey, Tom, Shannon, Meg, The entire Wasilla Noon Rotary club, who all in some way, whether financially or morally, supported my exchange.

My Awesome Alaska Friends: Thank you to all of you for giving me the support while I was abroad.  Thank you also for the postcards and mail.  I'll see you all later.

Caroline and Lara: You two freaks.  Thank you for keeping me laughing this year.  We'll all see eachother sometime, somewhere in this world.  Thanks you both for letting me crash or hang out with you guys this year.  We'll see eachother again.  Lara, I can't wait for what we've got planned next summer.  See you guys later.

------------

Thank you to, if you have been reading my blog.  I will keep posting as long as it makes sense to do so.  I'll be uploading pictures from my last week in Germany after I get back.  Stay tuned.

I'm down to my last week in Germany, and what a year it has been! All the experiences we've had, all the relationships we've made, all the tears and trials -especially from these last few days- have changed me in ways unexplainable. This will be the last you'll hear from me until I'm back in the US. I want to spend my last week enjoying my life with my friends and family here, and the time is tiking oh-so fast.

So this is it. Tschüss, Bis Bald, Auf wiedersehen, Ihr Deutsche Leute, bitte in kontakt blieben.

"And somehow, in some way, we will find our place between these two worlds"

I agree with your Dad, Sarah. What a great post. I'm so thankful to your parents for stepping out of their comfort zone and allowing you the opportunity both personnally and finacially to go to Germany for this wonderful year. I've been following your blogs and posts and can easily tell it's been an awesome year for you. You've turned into quite the worldly, amazing young woman. Sorry it has to come to an end, but I'm sure it'll be something you'll remember forever. Hugs, Auntie Linda
